Home secretary Priti Patel reportedly ordered officials to explore plans for building an asylum processing centre on a remote volcanic island in the south Atlantic - more than 4,000 miles from the UK. Home Office officials were instructed to look into the feasibility of transferring asylum seekers arriving in the UK to a centre on Ascension Island, a British overseas territory, according to the Financial Times. The Home Secretary asked officials to look into constructing an asylum processing centre on a remote volcanic island in the South Atlantic, it has been reported.
Priti Patel considered transferring asylum seekers to the British overseas territories of Ascension Island and St Helena, with the Foreign Office also consulted on the plan, the Financial Times reports. Both islands lie between between the coast of Africa and Brazil.
