Expert reaction to latest ONS stats on deaths in England and Wales up to week ending 3 July 2020

The Office for National Statistics have released the latest figures for deaths in England and Wales, including deaths from COVID-19 in all settings.
Prof Sheila Bird, Formerly Programme Leader, MRC Biostatistics Unit, University of Cambridge, said:
“The rate of decline of COVID-mention deaths [week ended 20 May to most the recently-ONS-reported week ended 3 July] is more gradual for England than in Scotland. However, later registration of deaths is permitted in England & Wales than in Scotland. Late registration leads to under-estimation of the rate of decline in pandemic fatalities...

Expert reaction to daily recorded COVID-19 deaths, Monday 13th July

The government have released the latest daily figures for deaths from COVID-19 in the UK.
Prof James Naismith FRS FRSE FMedSci, Director of the Rosalind Franklin Institute, and University of Oxford, said::
“These deaths represent a 11 heart breaking events for the families and loved ones. For the country, the toll dipping to levels last seen in early March will correctly be seen as sign that the lock down has worked. We know there is always some delay in weekend numbers. I doubt anyone will forget how fast 11 deaths became 100's, nor just how long it took us to get down these lower levels...
