Yet the city of coal may find it hard to adjust to life with oil billionaires Newcastle had been mining coal for at least six centuries when, in March 1938, the American geologist Max Steineke struck oil in eastern Saudi Arabia. His find had momentous consequences: what turned out to be the world's largest exploitable oil reserves made Saudi Arabia crucial to the global economy and the politics of the Middle East, and a kingdom that other countries found it useful to befriend.
