The title of Michel Barnier's book, as he makes clear, refers to two great works. One is Jean Renoir's film La Grande illusion, a wartime tale of civilized enmity; the other is The Great Illusion, Norman Angell's classic essay on the evils of nationalism. But to fans of British popular fiction, Barnier's “secret diary” may evoke that of Adrian Mole, a well-meaning character whose brush with the world of Westminster politicians proves to be a source of frustration.
