An elderly tourist from China died from a coronavirus infection in a French hospital, becoming the first person to die from the illness in Europe, France's health minister said today.
“I was informed last night of the death of an 80-year-old patient who was hospitalized... since January 25 and who had a pulmonary infection from the coronavirus,” Agnès Buzyn said in a statement .
“This is the first death due to the coronavirus outside Asia.”

The first death from the coronavirus outside of Asia has been recorded.
France's health minister confirmed on Saturday that a Chinese tourist had died of the virus in France, noting the first fatality from the virus in Europe.
The unidentified man arrived in France on January 16 and was quarantined in hospital on January 25, France said.
The virus has now infected more than 67,000 people and killed more than 1,500. The vast majority of cases are in China.
