When is a Roman emperor not an emperor?

The media this morning are full of a new Roman emperor of the third century CE, Sponsian by name. In brief, a handful of Roman gold coins with his imperial head were found in Romania in the eighteenth century, but rejected as fakes in the nineteenth. The coins were the only evidence for this ruler's existence, so he disappeared along with the authenticity of his coins. The coins have now been reanalysed and argued to be genuine, however, so Sponsian as Roman emperor is back.
