The BBC postponed the plan to end free TV licences for over-75s because of coronavirus but is now pressing ahead with the controversial change
The BBC is going ahead with plans to end free TV licences for the over-75s.
More than three million households will be asked to pay the £157.50 fee from August 1.
The broadcaster postponed the controversial change, which was originally due to be made on June 1, because of the coronavirus pandemic.
But BBC chairman Sir David Clementi said it could not delay the scheme any longer ‘without impacting on programmes and services'.

The free TV licence for over-75s will be means-tested from August 1, the BBC has said. The broadcaster agreed to take on responsibility for funding the scheme as part of the charter agreement hammered out with the government in 2015. It was due to introduce means-testing at the start of last month, but it was delayed until August because of the coronavirus.
