The Pentagon is attempting to distance its leaders from the president's walk through a park forcefully cleared of protesters and a photo-op at a nearby church Monday evening.
A senior defense official on a press call said that Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, who accompanied the president on the walk, were not aware the park had been cleared by law enforcement, according to reporters on the call.
