President Donald Trump's claims that he has "secured the oil" in Syria as it withdraws troops from the country are incorrect, and US forces are scrambling to figure out how to protect key oil fields in the country, both US and Kurdish officials said.
Trump tweeted Sunday that the US is withdrawing from Syria having "secured the oil" in the country's eastern oil fields.
Officials in the region said that talks are ongoing about re-deploying US troops to the Deir Al Zor region to protect a series of contested oil fields that provide a key revenue stream to whoever controls them.
