SpaceX is set to launch astronauts on Wednesday. Here's how Elon Musk's company became NASA's best shot at resurrecting American spaceflight

SpaceX is set to launch two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station on Wednesday.
If successful, it will be the first crewed US spacecraft launch since the end of NASA's space shuttle program in 2011.
The historic launch is the product of NASA's Commercial Crew program, a partnership between the space agency and private companies to build spaceships that can ferry astronauts to and from the space station.

"For those of us who've been living with switches from the 60s for all these years," Behnken added, "a modern interface is something that's pretty exciting."

Mission managers will be closely monitoring the weather for the first launch of astronauts aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft, not just around the Kennedy Space Center, but along a corridor stretching thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean in case the crew capsule has to escape from its Falcon 9 rocket during the climb into orbit.
The parameters to screen for acceptable weather downrange were added on top of the standard launch weather...
