Holders crash out Mikel Arteta's men were back in FA Cup action earlier today, in a meeting with Southampton at St. Mary's. The Gunners are of course the competition holders, having defied the odds en route to glory in August's finale under Mikel Arteta. To say that Arsenal's efforts to retain their crown this time around subsequently proved disappointing, though, would be an understatement. The north Londoners only booked their meeting with Southampton today courtesy of a nail-biting extra-time downing of Newcastle United two weeks ago. And, this afternoon, the visitors were brought...

Gabriel Magalhaes struggled in Arsenal's defeat to Southampton
Mikel Arteta has defended Gabriel Magalhaes after the Brazilian's own goal dumped Arsenal out of the FA Cup on Saturday.
The Gunners slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Southampton at St Mary's and last year's FA Cup winners are now out at the fourth-round stage.
Gabriel was starting his first game since December 22 as he has been sidelined with Covid-19 and the 23-year-old was far from his best against Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.
But Arteta has praised the Brazilian's impact since he joined Arsenal last summer and suggested the...

Arteta heavily rotated his side for the Cup clash
Paul Merson has been left baffled by Mikel Arteta's decision to field a weakened team in Arsenal 's FA Cup defeat at the hands of Southampton on Saturday.
A first-half own goal from Gunners defender Gabriel was enough to knock the holders out of the competition at the fourth-round stage.
Arteta fielded a second-string team, with the likes of Thomas Partey and Bukayo Saka only making the bench, while the in-form Emile Smith Rowe was left out of the squad completely.
Gabriel's own goal condemned the Gunners to defeat

Holders crash out The Gunners of course got the defence of their FA Cup crown back underway a short time ago, with a trip to St. Mary's. Arteta's men headed into proceedings brimming with confidence, on the back of a major upturn in form, culminating in 5 wins from 6 across all competitions. Southampton, though, were never likely to prove pushovers, with Ralph Hasenhuttl's men having enjoyed a stellar campaign of their own to date. And, when all was said and done this afternoon, it was in fact the Saints who emerged on the right side of a 1-0 scoreline, to book their spot in the FA Cup's...

The Arsenal boss felt both players tried their hardest to affect the game
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has refused to criticise misfiring attackers Nicolas Pepe and Willian after the duo were ineffective once again in the Gunners' FA Cup defeat to Southampton.
The holders gave a meek defence of their title as they lost 1-0 at St Mary's on Saturday, with Kyle Walker-Peters' first-half cross deflecting in via Gabriel for the game's only goal.
Arsenal were second best throughout the first 45 minutes and only improved a little after the restart, managing just two shots on target in a largely...
