How it was told
“It's political correctness gone mad” is a familiar phrase these days. It has been used to describe straight bananas , wearing goggles to play conkers and a multitude of other stories.
Last week nurses were in the firing line. Reports claimed that the Royal College of Nursing had ordered nurses to stop calling female patients “ladies” following the introduction of a style guide on January 28.
The story was broken by the Daily Mirror on February 1. They reported that as well as dropping “lady”, nurses are to avoid calling mature patients “OAPs, elderly or pensioners” in favour of “older people”. “The disabled” has also been jettisoned in favour of “people with disabilities” and “alcoholics” are to be termed “alcohol misusers”.
They opted for the headline: “Nurses ban the use of ‘OAPs, elderly and pensioner' to avoid ‘causing offence'”.
